Suspect shot during botched robbery of armored truck appears in court in wheelchair

No bond set for Giobel Fonseca

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Workers pressure cleaned the pavement outside a Homestead TD Bank on Wednesday and customers were turned away, a day after a deadly armed robbery.

Police said two robbers targeted an armored truck Tuesday that was parked outside the bank at 2495 NE Eighth St.

The FBI questioned witnesses late into the night, many of them customers who rushed to safety when they heard the shots.

"We turned around and the man ran on the side with a gun and started shooting," one customer said. "My main concern was to get the kid out of the bank through the back door. That's all I did."

Police sources told Local 10 News that the guard inside the truck fought back and shot both robbers.

Cellphone video captured officers tending to the injured guard, who was later airlifted to Jackson South Community Hospital.

One of the accused robbers died at the scene.

The other suspect, identified as Giobel Fonseca, tried to escape. Police said they found him heading northbound on the Turnpike. Fonseca was arrested and appeared in federal court Wednesday in a wheelchair.

No bond was set and he is expected to be arraigned on Jan. 4.
