HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Two people were shot Tuesday during an attempted robbery of an armored truck outside a TD Bank branch in Homestead, a police source told Local 10 News.
The incident was reported at the TD Bank at 2495 NE Eighth St. Miami-Dade police confirmed that Cutler Ridge-based officers responded to the robbery.
The source told Local 10 News that the guard fought back and shot the two robbers. Sky 10 was above the scene shortly before 5 p.m. and saw a tarp covering the body of one man.
A fast-food worker told Local 10 News reporter Carlos Suarez that she heard at least six shots.
"At the beginning, I thought it was fireworks, but then I went over there and saw the body lying down," Carmen Rivera said. "It's scary. It's my first time seeing a body, so I kind of panicked and came to the store."
The identities of the people shot have not been released.
Cellphone video captured the armored guard being treated.
"There is one person deceased. There is one guard, security guard, officer who was injured in the exchange of gunfire, and he was transported to the hospital and is being treated," Detective Fernando Morales of Homestead police said.
The source said the surviving suspect fled in a vehicle and was stopped in the northbound lanes on Florida's Turnpike at Southwest 152nd Avenue.
Sky 10 was above the highway as the suspect was placed onto a stretcher and taken away.
Some of the customers inside the bank were allowed to leave hours after the shooting took place.
A woman, who was shaken up, said she grabbed a child and ran to safety during the robbery attempt.
"We turned around and the man ran on the side with a gun and started shooting," she said. "My main concern was to get the kid out of the bank through the back door. That's all I did."
A source said the guard was also shot and was airlifted to Jackson South Community Hospital.
The FBI is leading the investigation into the attempted robbery and shooting.
