MIAMI – Ten people were injured and four people were taken to North Shore Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries Monday after a multivehicle crash in Miami.
The incident took place along Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest 79th Street.
Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said a woman in her late 50s driving a U-Haul truck slammed into the back of a vehicle, which caused a chain reaction.
One of the vehicles ended up on a sidewalk.
"She looked like she was having some type of medical emergency," witness Tia Lewis said.
Lewis said she went over to the U-Haul truck and took out the key.
"She said that she had had open-heart surgery and that she was recovering from that and she blacked out and she hit the accelerator," Lewis said.
Lewis said there was a lot of chaos on the street after the crash.
A total of seven vehicles were damaged in the incident.
"Several witnesses said that the driver still had her foot on the gas and they saw the wheels actually spinning on the U-Haul truck," Carroll said.
The driver of the U-Haul was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A minivan driver and passenger were also taken to a hospital, along with the driver of another vehicle, Carroll said. Those three people had non-life-threatening injuries.
"This could have been a lot worse seeing that there were a lot of people that were outside walking along the sidewalk," Carroll said.
