Miami-Dade police sergeant suspended after accidental shooting

Raynier Miranda struck by bullet while Wanda Roman cleaning her gun

MIAMI – A Miami-Dade police sergeant has been suspended with pay and a maintenance worker at the South Florida apartment complex where she lives is recovering after he was shot when the officer's gun discharged while she was cleaning it.

Wanda Roman was inside her apartment Sept. 15 when the revolver fired. The bullet went through the front door and struck Raynier Miranda, who was cleaning the hallway in the apartment building.

Miranda said the bullet pierced the aortic artery in his left arm and passed through his chest. He said he didn't know at first that he'd been shot.

Miranda's attorney said his client found out that he was shot at Jackson South Community Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

"He was within a half inch of losing his life," Miranda's attorney, Glen Goldberg, said Friday.

Goldberg said his client wants more cooperation and information from Miami-Dade police, who are investigating the incident.

"To make things worse, she did not notify the Police Department that her weapon was fired," Goldberg said.

Miranda said he is still in pain after undergoing two surgeries, but what hurts the most is being unable to carry or play with his 2-year-old son, Alexander.

"Not one representative from Miami-Dade police or from any agency have come to talk to Mr. Miranda to apologize to him," Goldberg said.

Roman is a 10-year veteran of the department. She has been suspended with pay.
