PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Democratic U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson beat her opponent, former Miami Dolphins player Randal Hill, in the race for Florida's 24th congressional district.
Wilson has represented the district, which covers portions of northwest Miami-Dade County and southern Broward County, including Miramar, North Miami and Hialeah, since 2013.
The incumbent told the SunSentinel in a previous interview that she was running for re-election because she has "so much unfinished business to continue," including combating the Zika virus, creating stricter gun laws and fighting climate change.
Hill had told the paper that he decided to run to bring a fresh perspective to the office and claimed that his 12 years working as a federal agent trained him to be a leader and "tackle tough issues."
Wilson is the founder of the Florida Ports Caucus, a bipartisan coalition formed to help pass the Water Resources Reform and Development Act, according to her election website. She was also appointed to President Barack Obama's "My Brother's Keeper" advisory council.
"I will continue to fight for them," she said. "We will fight for climate change. We will fight to find some sort of resolution to Zika. We will fight for criminal justice reform and we will fight to make our community safe."
Wilson will not face any opposition in the Nov. 8 general election.
