MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A man was killed and a boy was injured during a shooting Monday night in Miami Gardens, police said.
Family members identified the victims as Spencer Robinson, 35, and his 12-year-old, Sylvester.
Miami Gardens police said Sylvester was shot in the foot during the gunfire that took place in the 19300 block of Northwest 39th Court.
Spencer Robinson's older sister, Helena, was lying in bed when she heard the gunshots.
"Shots just started ringing out so we all got on the floor," she said.
But Robinson and his son were out on the porch when someone started firing at them.
"All of the sudden my brother comes running in the house, bleeding, yelling, 'Help me, help me,' and I tell him to 'lay down, get own on the floor, don't move. Just stay still,'" Helena said.
A neighbor told Local 10 News that he believes the father and son were victims of a drive-by shooting.
"They rode by and a guy was sitting on the porch, and they just started shooting," Mike Kirkland said.
Both father and son were taken to Aventura Hospital. Police said Robinson died on the way to the hospital. He leaves behind two sons and two daughters.
Sylvester was transferred to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where he is recovering.
Helena Robinson said her brother wasn't perfect, but she isn't sure who would want to target him. She is begging her neighbors to speak up if they saw something.
"Speak up! Stop letting people do these killings and y'all know what's going on, because one day it might be yours," she said.
Miami Gardens police spokeswoman Petula Burks said Robinson was also a victim of another shooting in 2011, at which time he was affiliated with known gang members.
Burks said the 2011 shooting also occurred in front of Robinson's home.
According to Burks, both Robinson and his son were uncooperative with officers at the scene before they were taken to the hospital.
Police are searching for a gold Dodge Charger that they believe may be connected to the shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
