LAUDERHILL, Fla. – A Broward sheriff's deputy fatally shot a dog Friday while serving a search warrant at a home in Lauderhill, authorities said.
The incident was reported shortly after 2:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of Northwest First Street.
Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said deputies were executing a narcotics search warrant when they encountered a pit bull.
Coleman-Wright said the dog was being aggressive, so deputies deployed a noise flash diversionary device to deter the dog before a deputy was forced to shoot.
Neighbors disputed deputies' claims, telling Local 10 News reporter Andrew Perez that the dog was just barking.
"Regardless of what (is going on), the dog is gonna bark, because this is the dog's yard," one woman said. "It lives here, so that's what it knows, to bark when someone's coming in the yard that don't live here. So how they kill one dog, but they didn't kill the other one? I don't understand that. They killed the first dog they saw. The dog didn't do anything to the police. They just put the gun to his head and shot him. That's it."
Sky 10 was above the scene as authorities took photos of the pit bull in the backyard of the home before the dog's carcass was removed.
A woman, identified as Shaneka Caldwell, 29, was arrested on multiple drug charges.
According to an arrest report, Caldwell told deputies that she had a firearm in her purse, which they found in a bedroom, along with a large amount of cash.
Deputies said a second gun was found inside the home, as well as drugs, including flakka, MDMA, cocaine and heroin.
