MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Three people were injured Tuesday in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 1 near the 29.5 mile marker on the South Pine Channel Bridge.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2004 Nissan Xterra was heading north and traveled into the southbound lane. A 2005 Chevrolet truck was traveling south and tried to avoid the Nissan, but the vehicles collided head-on.

The Nissan came to rest in the southbound lane, and the truck came to rest in the northbound lane and shoulder.

The driver of the Nissan was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. Troopers said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver and passenger of the truck were taken to Fishermen's Hospital.

Traffic was backed up for several miles in both directions as a result of the crash. The road reopened about 8:45 p.m.
