MIAMI – A panhandler was shot by a security guard Thursday morning at a Miami Metromover station, police said.
The shooting happened early Thursday morning at the Metromover School Board Station on Northeast 15th Street.
Miami-Dade police said a security guard asked the panhandler to leave the Metromover. He did, but later returned and became violent, biting and trying to choke the guard.
During the struggle, the guard shot the man, police said.
"You've got to defend yourself," Robert Carroll, who takes the Metromover every day, told Local 10 News.
Carroll said he's seen plenty of panhandlers on the trains, but he's never seen anything violent.
Both the panhandler and the guard were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. The unidentified man is in surgery.
The Metromover was shut down for several hours during the investigation, but it has since reopened.
