500 gallons of hydrogen peroxide spill in Fort Lauderdale

Crews use buckets to clean up spill

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – About 500 gallons of hydrogen peroxide spilled into a holding tank in Fort Lauderdale when a pipe broke at a sewage treatment plant Monday, Fort Lauderdale officials said.

The spill happened near the 1100 SE 17th Street Causeway.

Crews worked to remove the hydrogen peroxide from the tank manually with buckets, since the chemical reactions with anything organic, officials said. 

Residents were not impacted by the spill. However, as a precaution, patrons from a nearby Outback Steakhouse were evacuated, officials said.
