SeaWorld said Tilikum has a bacterial infection and medicine doesn't seem to be helping.
"Our teams are treating him with care and medication for what we believe is a bacterial infection in his lungs," SeaWorld said on its website. "However, the suspected bacteria is very resistant to treatment and a cure for his illness has not been found.
Tilikum has been at the park for 23 years and made headlines after dragging veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau to the bottom of a pool at SeaWorld in 2010, where she drowned.
Tilikum was also the whale featured in the controversial "Blackfish" documentary.
