4 arrested after toddler abducted by mother in Miami, police say

Leydibet, Logan Hernandez found in Laredo, Texas

MIAMI ā€“ Four people are facing charges after a toddler was allegedly abducted by his biological mother over the weekend in Miami.

Authorities said Leydibet Hernandez, 29, was arrested Sunday in Laredo, Texas, and three others in Miami also face charges of interfering with custody and making a false report to police.

Those arrested in the case include the boy's caretaker, Rebeca Rodriguez, 56, her son and Hernandez's boyfriend Juan Pablo Mesa Jr., 33, and the boy's grandmother, Lazara Ortiz, 55.

Rodriguez previously told Local 10 News that Hernandez is a "good mother."

According to Rodriguez, Hernandez and her son are dating and living next door to her. She said she agreed to take temporary custody of 20-month-old Logan Hernandez pending a court order.

Police said Hernandez's custody had been previously revoked, and she was only allowed supervised visits with her son.

The abduction was reported overnight Saturday at Rodriguez's home in the 2600 block of Southwest 34th Court in Miami.

Surveillance video obtained by Local 10 News shows a Mazda CX5, believed to be Hernandez's SUV, pull up to the home and a man is seen leaving the home with something wrapped in a blanket.

Her SUV was later found by police Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Southwest 27th Street and Southwest 32nd Avenue, about a half-mile from the kidnapping site.

According to an arrest report, Mesa told detectives that his mother called him Sunday morning asing, "Where is Leydibet and the baby?"

Detectives said he claimed to have searched for them in the immediate area and then he and his mother called police to say that Hernandez took Logan from his crib.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement canceled the Amber Alert Sunday evening, after Hernandez and her son were found in Laredo, Texas, more than 1,500 miles from where the baby was allegedly abducted.

According to the report, Mesa was aware that Hernandez and Logan had boarded a bus to Laredo at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Laredo police Investigator Joe Baeza told Local 10 News reporter Layron Livingston that Miami police alerted them about Hernandez possibly being on a bus in the area.

Through coordination with Miami police and Omnibus, the driver pulled over at a truck stop on Interstate 35 and waited for authorities to arrive and remove Hernandez and Logan from the bus.

Texas authorities said Logan was fine and "well nourished."

According to Baeza, Hernandez was released from jail in Laredo Sunday night because there was no out-of-state extradition order, but Hernandez has an active warrant in Miami. Her son was taken into the custody of Texas' Child Protective Services and will be returned to South Florida with the help of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Logan will then be placed into foster care.
