Domestic dispute leads to police gunfire outside Dadeland Mall

Officer fires gun at driver who would not stop when ordered, police say

KENDALL, Fla. – An argument between a man and his wife Tuesday night led to a Miami-Dade police officer firing his gun outside Dadeland Mall, police said.

Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said Michael Guzman, 36, got into a domestic dispute with his wife at a restaurant and began pulling her from the table. The two were at a family gathering.

Zabaleta said a relative, who was in his van, saw the argument and got out to help Guzman's wife. Zabaleta said Guzman then pushed his wife into the van and started to drive away.

Guzman's wife jumped out of the moving van in an attempt to escape, Zabaleta said.

Detectives were in the area for an unrelated matter and witnessed the altercation. They ordered Guzman to stop, but he ignored their commands and kept driving, forcing one of the detectives to fire his gun, Zabaleta said.

Soon after, officers swarmed the mall and began their search for Guzman.

The search led officers to Southwest 88th Street and Southwest 61st Avenue, where police said they found Guzman trying to get away.

He was taken into custody and then taken to a hospital for chest pains. Guzman's wife was also taken to the hospital after jumping from the moving van.

Police said no one was hurt by the gunfire.

Guzman was arrested on charges of kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and false imprisonment.
