Man pretends to work at West Park car dealership during burglary

Thief stopped by maintenance worker, deputies say

WEST PARK, Fla. – A suspected  burglar was shown the door at a West Park car dealership last month after he pretended to be there for his daily shift, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said.

Newly released surveillance video shows a man walking into an unlocked door at Benji Auto Sales, 3805 S. State Road 7, just after 6 a.m. Jan. 27 and start searching each office.

Video shows him trying to open a cash register before he was approached by a maintenance worker in the hallway who had heard a noise and went to investigate.

BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said the burglar told the employee that he was "here for work," but he was quickly led out of the building by the worker.

Detectives said the burglar has a distinct limp. He was last seen wearing a green jacket, camouflage pants and a backpack. For part of the time, he was wearing a clear plastic bag over his clothes.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Armand Demosthenes at 954-985-1953 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
