Police said around 7 p.m. Monday, a car salesman at Gillman Chrysler Jeep Dodge on West Sam Houston Parkway South was beaten up and shoved into the trunk of the car while taking a man on what he thought was a test drive.
The salesman was able to get free and jump from the trunk of the moving car, police said. The armed thief then went after the man, according to police. After a short tussle, the salesman got the gun from the thief and fired multiple shots, police said.
It is unknown if the carjacker was hit. The thief then got back into the car and fled, according to police.
What the carjackers didn't realize was the salesman intentionally left his smartphone in the trunk during his escape. He was able to contact police and they used the "Find My Friend" app to track down the kidnappers and the car.
There was a short chase and the two suspects were able to jump out and run away after crashing on Dairy Ashford near Westheimer.
The salesman is expected to fully recover. His family said he is recovering at Memorial Hermann Southwest.
Police continue their search for at least two men on the run.
