Surfer bitten on foot by shark in Deerfield Beach

Peter Kirn, 21, bitten by 5-foot spinner shark

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. ā€“ A 21-year-old surfer was bitten on the foot Monday while catching some waves in Deerfield Beach.

Broward sheriff's fire rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said Peter Kirn, of Palm Beach County, was bitten by a 5-foot spinner shark.

According to Kirn, he was surfing about 50 yards offshore with his friend when he was attacked. He said he saw the shark jump and spin after he was bitten on his left foot.

Kirn swam to shore and went to a lifeguard tower for help. Ocean Rescue stabilized his injuries and he was taken to Broward Health North, where he is waiting to get stitches.

Kirn said he has been surfing his whole life and is lucky that the bite wasn't worse.

Authorities have issued a red flag warning in the area. Forecasters also warned people about getting in the water Monday as strong wind gusts increased the potential for dangerous rip currents.
