PINECREST, Fla. – Miami-Dade firefighters responded to a home in Pinecrest Monday morning after receiving reports of a fire.
The fire was reported about 10:15 a.m. at a home in the area of Southwest 67th Avenue and 100th Street.
Smoke could be seen coming from the front door of the residence as fire crews sprayed the home with water.
Fire crews said the heat became too intense and firefighters had to fight the blaze from the outside for their own safety.
"We have 17 crews on scene that are actively fighting this fire at this moment," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Michelle Fayd said. "They are diligently working to extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, because of the amount of heat this fire put off, it has required our crews, for their safety, to exit the structure and start fighting the fire from the outside."
Authorities said the family who lives at the home called 911 after the fire broke out and was able to safely evacuate the home.
Local 10 News reporter Glenna Milberg, reporting from the scene, said the fire started from a cigarette.
She said the home was built in 1948, and burned rapidly because of its wood frame.
Fire officials said it took crews about three hours to extinguish the fire.
A portion of the home is uninhabitable.
No other properties were threatened in the area.
