BSO detention deputy involved in fatal pedestrian crash

Traffic homicide investigators trying to determine why pedestrian wasn't on sidewalk

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A Broward Sheriff's Office detention deputy was involved in a fatal crash involving a pedestrian early Tuesday morning in Pompano Beach.

The fatal crash occurred just before 4 a.m. in the 2100 block of Northwest 31st Avenue.

BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said Deputy Timothy Rolle was driving the car that struck and killed a pedestrian.

The deputy was returning to work from a break at the time of the crash.

"It is unclear right now as to why the pedestrian was in the roadway," Carter said. "We know that he was in the roadway, not on the sidewalk. We don't know if he was attempting to cross the road or was just walking on the road for some reason."

Carter said the victim, identified as Jerome Byrd, 60, was not near a crosswalk or intersection.

Byrd was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rolle was not injured.
