2 inmates escape work details in Miami-Dade County

Police: James Dukes, Manuel Guzman both in custody

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Two schools were placed on lockdown Thursday after two inmates escaped from two separate work details, police said.

Police identified the minimum security inmates as Manuel Guzman and James Dukes, both 20.

Dukes was found about 4 p.m. in the area of Southwest 108th Avenue and 216th Street. Police said Guzman was found shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday in the area of Southwest 247th Street and Southwest 109th Avenue.

Police said Guzman was previously last seen in the area of Southwest 248th Street and 112th Avenue, while Dukes escaped from the area of Southwest 134th Avenue and 255th Street.

Goulds Elementary and Miami Douglas MacArthur South Senior High School were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Sky 10 was above the scene just after 12:30 p.m. as a Miami-Dade corrections truck was surrounded by police cars.

A Miami-Dade police helicopter was seen scanning the area for the inmates, while officers gathered outside a nearby home on Southwest 108th Place and 247th Street.

Guzman's criminal history includes convictions of carjacking and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Dukes has a more extensive criminal history, which includes numerous burglary and grand theft convictions.

Guzman was taken to Miami-Dade police's South District station for further questioning.
