MIAMI – A man accused of crashing his car and killing two men outside Miami's Jumbo's restaurant in 2012 was sentenced Friday to 10 years in state prison.
Antonio Lawrence, 57, pleaded guilty to all six counts against him, including two counts of DUI manslaughter, three counts of DUI with damage to a vehicle and one count of DUI with damage to Jumbo's restaurant.
Lawrence was also sentenced to 10 years of probation following his release from prison.
Miami police said Lawrence had a blood-alcohol level of 0.253 percent in the June 30, 2012, crash that killed Wilton Harris, a pastor, and Aljo Hamlin, a church deacon.
Police said Lawrence lost control of his SUV and hit two parked cars, sending one of them into Jumbo's. Harris and Hamlin were outside the restaurant when they were hit.
A tearful Lawrence wiped the tears from his eyes while listening to testimony from the victims' family members in court.
"We have a new grandbaby, and I have the first great-grandbaby that he will never see," one of the victim's family members said.
Another woman told Lawrence through tears that she forgives him.
Despite being a landmark in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood, the owners of Jumbo's closed its door last year after serving the community for nearly 60 years.
