Coast Guard searches for missing cruise ship passenger near Marathon

Man falls from Liberty of the Seas cruise ship Sunday

MIAMI – The U.S. Coast Guard continues to search for a 43-year-old man who fell from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship off the coast of Marathon.

The man, who hasn't been identified, is believed to have fallen from the Liberty of the Seas on Sunday when the ship was about 20 miles from the Florida Keys.

A representative for the Coast Guard told Local 10 News that crews from Miami and Marathon had been deployed, along with a helicopter crew. Two Canadian-affiliated boats that were in the area are also aiding in the search.

Early Monday, the Coast Guard said the Liberty of the Seas had continued on to its port. The ship arrived at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale just after 7 a.m. Monday, according to MarineTraffic.com.

Mike Wyatt, a passenger on the ship, recorded cellphone video of crew members searching for the passenger and posted it on Twitter.

The Liberty of the Seas had been traveling from Cozumel, Mexico, when the crew reported the passenger missing. It is unclear how he fell overboard.
