Grandfather shot, killed outside Miami home identified

Willie Warren, 77, gunned down in apparent robbery

MIAMI ā€“ A grandfather shot and killed in front of his home in Miami over the weekend has been identified by police as 77-year-old Willie Warren.

His family told Local 10 News that Warren had just retired from his job of 60 years in Medley when the fatal shooting happened.

According to police, Warren was in the driveway of his home in the 1200 block of Northwest 34th Street when he was shot in what appears to be an attempted robbery.

"He was, like, minding his own business and the guys came and they just shot him," said Roberto Aracena, who saw the men jump a fence and run away.

Warren was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died during surgery.

"For the guys to come over in his yard and treat him like he was a dog -- why did they have to kill my husband?" Warren's wife, Willie Jean Coleman said through tears. "It's too much."

Detectives believe that the three men might have been after the victim's jewelry.

"He wears chains and rings and things like that, but who doesn't?" said Murray.

The victim was found with his jewelry still intact, but a weapon that he was known to always carry was missing. Detectives are trying to determine if the attempted robbers shot the man with his own gun after failing to get the jewelry.

Police have not released a description of the shooters. No arrests have been made.
