Fire lieutenant treated for smoke inhalation

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A firefighter is out of the hospital after being treated for heat exhaustion while battling the flames at a Fort Lauderdale duplex early Wednesday morning.

The fire started shortly after 3 a.m. at a vacant duplex on Northwest 23rd Lane near Northwest 26th Street.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Department Deputy Chief Timothy Heiser said when firefighters arrived, "flames were shooting six to 10 feet in the air through the roof."

Heiser said a Fort Lauderdale fire lieutenant had to be taken to Broward Health Medical Center for evaluation.
