HIALEAH GARDENS, Fla. ā A suspect who escaped from police custody at Kendall Regional Medical Center has been apprehended in Hialeah Gardens, Miami-Dade police said.
Police said Ivan Zapata was taken into custody shortly before 2:30 p.m. Friday at an apartment complex near Northwest 88th Avenue and Northwest 119th Street.
Florida International University sent a text alert to students warning that Miami-Dade police were searching for a suspect with a tattoo on his face wearing a hospital gown and no shoes.
The alert said the suspect was considered armed and dangerous.
Miami-Dade police said Zapata assaulted an officer and ran out of the hospital. While in the parking lot, Zapata carjacked a woman and drove off.
The car was later found abandoned near FIU.
Police said Zapata was accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend. Police said he was taken to the hospital because he tried to kill himself by cutting his throat.
Zapata, who had an ice pack and bandage on his face, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation.
Carlos J. Finlay Elementary and Sweetwater Elementary schools were placed on lockdown during the manhunt.
