Evicted horses left in standing water outside Calder Casino

Horses kept in tents after being kicked out of stables

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Cellphone video shows horses standing in water, their stables flooded after steady rain that started Monday night and continued into Tuesday morning.

"It was pretty bad," stable worker Herbert Miller told Local 10 News.

The animals were kept in tents outside Calder Casino after they were evicted from their stables amid talks to possibly tear them down to make room for commercial development.

"We can't get to the barn because the water is a foot deep trying to get to the barn, and then we get into the barn and the horses are standing in six inches of water," horse owner Ed Broome said.

Broome learned just after midnight that his expensive thoroughbreds were in trouble.

"It's not good," Broome said.

After several calls to Calder Casino's parent company, Churchill Downs, the horses were allowed back to dry conditions in their old stables.

"We don't know what to do," Miller said.

It's a temporary solution until the next downpour.

"We need Churchill to step up to the plate, give us a little concession here and let us get through (these) winters months," Broome said.
