Police remain at school in case second gunman returns

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. ā€“ Miami Carol City Senior High School was surrounded by flashing lights Friday, a day after two teenagers were shot outside on campus.

"I heard seven shots and that's when I ran outside to see what happened," said Kenneth Hayes, who is friends with the victims. "Everybody was scared."

A representative with the Miami-Dade County school board said one of the victims sought help from a teacher, who they said assisted.

The two boys were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Unit. One of the victims who was shot in the head was listed in critical condition at the time, while the other was listed in stable condition.

Police said the shooting happened between 3:45 and 4 p.m.

"I feel uneasy being here. I don't know what is going to happen," said Hayes.

Police told Local 10 News that they have one suspect in custody but a second person remains on the run.

"They got the school locked down, and they are not going to let that stuff happen again," said ninth-grade student, Tyrece Witherspoon.

The high school, Carol City Middle School and Barbara Hawkins Elementary School were all placed on lockdown after the shooting.

Officials said 200 students in elementary school, 75 students in middle school and 400 students in high school were affected by the shooting.

Police have officers still at the scene of the crime Friday in the event that the accomplice they are looking for returns.
