BSO divers discover body in canal during training exercise

Body found in submerged car believed to be of woman missing since August 2013

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A body found inside a car in a Pompano Beach canal Wednesday is believed to be that of a woman missing since last year.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter said divers were performing a training exercise in the canal near North Palm Aire Drive when they discovered the submerged Nissan Maxima. Divers discovered a body inside.

Carter said the car was registered to Charlene Azzaro, who has been missing since August 2013. Azzaro, 56, had been living out of her car at the time of her disappearance.

Two women who arrived at the scene believe the body is of their sister.

"She was a wonderful, happy girl," a tearful Kathleen Platt said of her sister.

Platt said she believed her sister had fallen on hard times.

"It breaks my heart," Platt said.

A medical examiner will determine the identity.
