Andrew Rolle found guilty of fatally shooting Miami detective

James Walker shot, killed while off duty in 2008

MIAMI – A jury has found the man accused of fatally shooting a Miami detective in 2008 guilty of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said Andrew Rolle fired several shots at a rival gang member and then fatally shot Detective James Walker after he mistook the officer's car for his friend's getaway car.

The defense has claimed throughout the trial that the state had no physical evidence against Rolle in the case.

A previous jury could not reach a verdict in the case, and Rolle was granted a retrial.

"Well, we're very disappointed, but we do intend to appeal," said Rolle's attorney, David Peckins.

The decision was somewhat surprising given that the jury had been deadlocked hours earlier.

This time, jurors deliberated for two days before finally reaching a unanimous decision.

"Justice prevailed, truth prevailed and he couldn't hide behind what the truth was," said prosecutor Abbe Rifkin.

Rolle was also found guilty on two counts of attempted murder for shooting two people just before his run-in with Walker. He faces life in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 27.

"It's overdue -- long overdue -- but it's worth it," said Walker's partner, James Fraser.

Rolle is already serving a 20-year prison sentence for an armed robbery conviction in 2013 unrelated to this case.
