OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – More than 100 cars were scorched after a fire broke out at a junkyard in Opa-locka off 135th Street and Cairo Lane.
Sky 10 was over the scene just after 12 p.m. Monday as heavy smoke could be seen coming from the junkyard that had cars stacked on top of one another.
Fire officials say it took roughly 75 firefighters more than an hour to put out the massive blaze, with crews forced to attack the fire primarily with aerial units.
According to Capt. Ralph Bartoli of the Miami-Dade Fire Dept., the fire started when a worker was welding parts on one of the cars and a spark ignited.
Fire officials say the vehicles are supposed to be emptied of all liquids once they are brought in, but rarely are.
