MIAMI – A vacationing man fell to his death from a cruise ship Monday morning at PortMiami.
The North Carolina man was on board the Carnival Ecstasy as it was returning to port when he fell about 20 feet, Miami Fire Department spokesman Ignatius Carroll said.
Carnival Cruise Lines spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz said the 20-year-old passenger entered a restricted area, climbed onto the ship's forward mast, fell and landed on the deck.
He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died, Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.
Police said the man's fall was the equivalent of two decks of the ship.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time," de la Cruz said.
The man's identity has not been released.
