Man arrested in shooting of off-duty corrections officer in Miami

MIAMI – Miami-Dade police have arrested a man they said was involved in the shooting of an off-duty corrections officer.

Detectives said Roderick Everett, 23, admitted to driving the getaway car after another man shot 51-year-old Juan Guellmes outside his home in Miami on Aug. 29.

Police said at least one man armed with a handgun ripped Gullemes' gold chain from his neck, and shot him as Guellemes tried to fight him off.

According to the arrest report, Everett dropped off the gunmen and then drove around the block before picking him up.

Guellmes was shot once in the stomach and once in the shoulder. He was airlifted to Kendall Regional Medical Center and remains there in stable condition.

Everett is charged with armed robbery and attempted murder.
