Lawsuit filed against school, event company after girl seriously injured

Celaida Lissabet suffered brain injury after sumo wrestling game at Mater Academy Charter School

HIALEAH GARDENS, Fla. – The mother of a ninth grade student at Mater Academy Charter School in Hialeah Gardens has filed a lawsuit against the school and Mega Party Events. The lawsuit comes after the girl suffered a serious brain injury during a sumo wrestling game on spirit day.

The lawsuit alleges Celaida Lissabet was improperly fitted in the wrestling outfit, and wasn't properly supervised during the match on Oct. 4, 2013.

Her attorneys state the girl's head was slammed onto the hard ground numerous times before she was rushed to the emergency room.

The owner of Mega Party Events, Adrian De La Rosa, told Local 10 his company's insurance company interviewed the attendant and inspected the equipment used.

"On our end we followed all the safety requirements from A to Z," said De La Rosa. "Our attendant has 10 years of experience using the equipment. We have never had a problem with the equipment before or since. We still use it."

The suit claims Lissabet's brain injuries have resulted in her inability to adequately communicate, and have caused her to demonstrate child-like behavior and have anxiety issues.

Lissabet has not been able to return to school since the incident occurred.

De La Rosa said he has not been served with the lawsuit at this time.
