MIAMI ā A man convicted of killing a 13-year-old-girl in a 2012 hit-and-run crash has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Miami-Dade County Judge Ellen Sue Venzer handed down her sentence for Sandor Guillen on Friday.
The 39-year-old was found guilty of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident in March.
Guillen was intoxicated and speeding through a bus lane when he ran a red light and slammed into the van in which Kaely Camacho was riding with her family. Camacho was asleep at the time of the crash.
"The fact is, Mr. Guillen, when you chose to get drunk that night and get behind the wheel of that car, you set off a chain of event that led us all here today," Venzer said.
His attorney claimed during the trial that the lead detective in the crash investigation destroyed evidence.
Guillen could have faced up to 30 years in prison.
