Fire burns more than 1,200 acres in Everglades

Flames come close to Card Sound Road

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – More than 1,300 acres have burned in a brush fire that sparked in the Florida Everglades during the weekend.

The fire started off Card Sound Road, prompting its closure.

In some spots, the flames came just inches from the road.

One lane of Card Sound Road was reopened Monday.

The Florida Forest Service said the fire was about 40 percent contained, but it remains a threat to drivers.

"If there's smoke over the road, just make sure you have your headlights on and drive safely and don't be in a hurry," firefighter Roger Russell said.

Investigators believe arson is the cause of the fire.
