Bond set for Piper High School stabbing suspect; Victim leaves hospital

Attorney for Kimanie King says client is honor student

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Piper High School student was released from the hospital Friday, one day after an upperclassman stabbed him because of an argument during a basketball game, police said.

Meanwhile, the senior accused of stabbing him faces a hefty bond.

Standing silent with his lawyer at his side, Kimanie King made his first appearance in court Friday as a judge set the 18-year-old's bond at $1,500 on the charge of possession of a weapon school ground and $35,000 bond on the attempted murder charge.

Sunrise police said King was in gym class when he stabbed sophomore Urique Wilson, 16, with a pocket knife three times.

According to the police report, King demanded an apology from Wilson, who had bumped into him twice during gym class. The report said King went to the locker room to change his clothes and returned shortly before class was ending. That's when another argument ensued and King began to stab Wilson.

Wilson was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was released Friday. Wilson's father told Local 10 that one of the wounds was centimeters from his son's heart.

The fact that King was expected to be released from jail didn't set well with Joseph Watson.

"My son just got released and the same amount of days that my son spent inside the hospital (are the) same amount of days he spent in jail," Watson told reporters. "I mean, come on."

King's attorney, Barry Paul, told the judge his client was an honor student who is scheduled to graduate next month and has "never been in trouble a day in his life."

"He is certainly not a flight risk," Paul said. "He plays for the school's soccer team and is an all-city soccer player. He's employed part time at Winn-Dixie."
