Compressed hydrogen leaks from overturned tractor-trailer on Florida's Turnpike

Southbound lanes closed between Sample Road, Commercial Boulevard

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – A tractor-trailer overturned Tuesday morning on Florida's Turnpike, spilling cylinders of compressed hydrogen onto the highway.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Jachles said a hazardous materials team was working to clean the spill.

Jachles said the tractor-trailer was carrying 24 compressed hydrogen cylinders, some of which were leaking.

No injuries were reported.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of the truck was cited for speeding.

All southbound lanes of the turnpike from Sample Road to Commercial Boulevard were closed for several hours.

The lanes reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m., but the exit ramp at Coconut Creek Parkway remained closed so that the trailer could be removed.
