Cuban migrant arrives on Virginia Key after boat breaks down

Coast Guard searches for 2 others stranded at sea

MIAMI – A 65-year-old Cuban migrant who was stranded at sea for days is expected to remain in the country after arriving on Virginia Key early Tuesday morning.

The man was taken away by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, but spokesman Andre Roberts said he does not think there is a reason why the man would not be allowed to stay.

A group left Cuba by boat sometime during the weekend bound for Florida's coast, but the boat broke down after three days at sea. The man was picked up by a nearby fisherman who took him to shore.

"The fisherman saw them and offered them a ride," Miami police Officer Frederica Burden said.

Sky 10 was overhead as the U.S. Coast Guard searched for two others believed to have been with the man.
