Hallandale Beach police arrest suspect in hit-and-run death

12-year-old Shania Jackson died from injuries suffered in crash

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Hallandale Beach police arrested a suspect in connection with a hit-and-run case that killed 12-year-old Shania Jackson.

The suspect, Fernando Mayers turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday. He bonded out of jail Wednesday morning.

"He just don't know the pain he caused us right now," said Jackson's mother, Fiona Clarke. "I just want to let him know that he hurt our family so much. He had us in so much pains."

Police charged Mayers, 25,charged with vehicular homicide, crash involving death/leaving the scene, driving while license revoked, and driving while license revoked involving death.

Jackson (pictured above), who died on Sunday, was hit on Nov. 18 while crossing the street in the 600 block of Foster Road. A red Dodge sedan that witnesses said was involved in the incident was found several hours later behind a house at 410 NW 5th Avenue.

During a news conference, police also released video of a speeding rental car that detectives found and processed hours after the crash.

"We were led to Mr. Mayers by the mere fact that his mother was the person listed on the rental agreement for that vehicle," said Hallandale Beach Police Chief Dwayne Flournoy.

Police spent a week negotiating with Mayers' attorney before he surrendered.

"We didn't know where he was," said Flournoy.

Court records say Mayers, 25, has been arrested in the past for possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, and driving with a suspended license.
