Robbery suspect in custody after crash

Suspect identified as Leonardo Lopez

MIAMI – Police took a robbery suspect into custody on Tuesday afternoon following a crash.

Leonardo Lopez was wanted in six robberies, including one at a Valero gas station, said Miami police spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz. Lopez, 47, was released from jail in October.

"Our tactical robbery unit picked up a lead that he was somewhere in the area of 27th Avenue and Southwest 8th Street," said Cruz. "They spotted the vehicle, they began to follow it."

Lopez then crashed his car at Northwest 26th Avenue and 3rd Street, said Cruz.

"He hit the black Chevy pickup. That's what saved our lives," said Victor Rivera.

Rivera and a friend were fixing a car at the time.

"When he was coming toward us, I'm like 'move, move, move,' and I moved out of the way and the car landed right where he was standing," said Rivera.

Charges against Lopez are pending.
