COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – She's known for her giving nature and helping the community. Now, one organization is helping "Big Mama" do even more.
On Wednesday, Food For The Poor presented "Big Mama" Essie Reed with a $4,000 check to help her feed families on Thanksgiving.

"Jesus," she said over and over again as she was given the check.
"This year, is one of the hardest years," she told Local 10's Johanna Torres. "But that doesn't stop me from giving and helping others."
She says she's been dealing with what people call a bad economy all her life. She says she appreciates the donation she received from Food for the Poor.
"We've been helping her for years," said Robin Mahfood, president and CEO of Food For The Poor. "She does a great job and she's genuine.
Reed was so overjoyed she had tears in her eyes when she accepted the check. She said she was already on her way to give a turkey to the first family in need.
