MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A shooting at a McDonald's in Miami Gardens left two men injured Friday morning.
The shooting happened at Northwest 27th Avenue and 183rd Street about 6:45 a.m. Family members identified the victims as Michael Angelo Sexton, 23, and Martrell Shellman, 26. Both were listed in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital Friday evening.
"Our officers received a call regarding a shooting," said Miami Gardens Police Det. Mike Wright. "They observed two adult males shot inside their vehicle."
Witnesses described the shooting as a drive by.
"All hell broke loose, with guns and stuff like that, and [they] shot up the car," said Brittany Sexton, one of the victim's brothers.
Detectives dusted a silver Chevrolet for prints, but wouldn't say if the gunman used it.
"We can't articulate if it's the subject vehicle or if it was just someone in the McDonald's line," said Wright.
Kelvin Stewart said his brother Martrell was one of the victims, adding that he couldn't think of any reason why his brother would have been targeted.
"He was probably going to work or something. I don't know yet. That's all I got to say," said Stewart.
Court records say Shellman was set to be arraigned Friday morning in a Miami courtroom. His criminal record includes arrests for assault, burglary, and grand theft.
Dentha Harvin said Sexton, her 23-year-old son (pictured below), was shot in the chest. She said stopped at the McDonald's after leaving a club when the shooting happened.
"Please, this my son," said Harvin. "All this shooting is not solving anything but hurting other people."
"He's been through a lot," added Brittany Sexton. "[It's] not the first time he's been shot. This is the most critical."
Police said the shooting didn't appear related to another drive-by shooting on Wednesday that killed a 12-year-old girl.
"We are not considering this a connection," said Wright.
Miami Gardens police said charges are pending.
Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Miami Gardens Police Det. C. Pacheco at 305-474-1583 or Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477). Police said tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000, and all calls are kept anonymous.
