1 injured, 1 arrested in road rage crashes

Man arrested after pulling gun, causing two crashes

MEDLEY, Fla. – S.R. 826 was closed for hours late Friday night in Medley after police say an enraged driver pulled a gun on one driver and crashed into two cars.

The incident began in Pinecrest. Police said Edwin Vilchez began to fight with a woman with two children in her car shortly after 8 p.m. Friday. Other drivers stopped and got involved in the argument, and Vilchez pulled a gun on one of the men who had stopped to help.

That man got in his car and drove away, but Vilchez followed him, rear-ended him, and then took off going north on the Palmetto.

Vilchez then continued north to where things came to a crashing end at the Palmetto near NW 74th Street. There, he crashed into an SUV and continued speeding off. One person from that SUV was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were able to catch and arrest Vilchez at the off ramp to Okeechobee Road.

Vilchez is currently charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, resisting arrest with violence, displaying a firearm, and criminal mischief.
