Coral Springs police said a truck driven by Wayne McIntosh, 47, was traveling southbound on Coral Ridge Drive when it hit a Honda Civic driven by Maria Uribe, 52. Uribe was driving westbound on Riverside Drive.

Detectives said Uribe had a flashing red light and McIntosh had a flashing yellow light at the time of the crash, which is still under investigation.

Alejandro Romeo, 17, a passenger in the Civic, died on the scene. Uribe was transported to North Broward Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

McIntosh and his passenger, Claude Noralis, 19, were taken to North Broward Medical Center in serious condition.

Kim Jachles heard the impact from her home. She rushed over to try and help.

"It's terrible to know that just a few minutes ago, this family was on their way somewhere, and these men were just doing their job and the night ended up like this," said Jachles.

After the two vehicles collided, the truck driven by McIntosh hit a tree before hitting Riverside Elementary School.

The impact left a gaping hole into a classroom, said police.

Broward County Public School officials are surveying the damage and making temporary repairs to secure the building so it can open for regular school hours on Monday.

Students of at least one classroom will have to be relocated to another room while permanent repairs are made. Parents of those affected students are being notified of the relocation.
