MIAMI – Two teenagers were seriously injured Sunday night after a car crashed onto a sidewalk in downtown Miami.
It happened about 8 p.m. at Northeast 11th Street and Northeast First Avenue.
Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said a man was driving a BMW in the wrong direction on Northeast 11th Street when it struck another car.
The collision caused the BMW to drive onto the sidewalk, striking the 18- and 19-year-old victims. The impact caused one of the victims to be pinned to a light pole.
Witnesses said after the crash, the driver, identified by police as Jermaine Givens, tried to get away. Two people have been credited with keeping Givens at the scene until police arrived.
"Several bystanders, including some people that were attending some of the area nightclubs, thought that he was trying to run, and at that time they sprang into action," Carroll said.
A Local 10 News camera caught Givens being given a field sobriety test before being placed in handcuffs and taken away.
Both teens were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, but they were listed in stable condition.
Givens faces charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries and property damage.
