Miami-Dade Parks awarded for Fit2Play program

Jorge Mora, Assistant Director of Operations for Miami-Dade Co. Parks & Rec and Dr. Sarah Messiah, consultant for Miami-Dade Parks' "Fit2Play" program hold the 2017 Sapphire Award.

MIAMI – Childhood obesity is a big problem across America, but Miami-Dade Parks is doing its part to help kids stay in shape.

The "Fit2Play" childhood obesity prevention program of the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, has been honored by the Florida Blue Foundation, a branch of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation Inc., with the 2017 Sapphire Award.  The "Fit2Play" program also received $50,000!

The daily program includes Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK) and "EmpowerMe4Life", a nutrition education curriculum grounded in the American Heart Association's recommendations.

The Sapphire Awards honor outstanding work by individuals, programs and nonprofit organizations in community health care, or health care-related fields, distinguished by leadership, innovation and achievements in community health.
