MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Recently released studies are showing promise for ways to treat gynecologic cancers without chemotherapy.
Dr. Brian Slomovitz with Mount Sinai Medical Center recently published a trial that found two non-chemo oral medications showed longer disease free survival than traditional therapy for women with recurrent endometrial cancer.
“We’re breaking down the tumors. We’re not seeing how it looks like under a microscope, we’re seeing what the different molecules, the different proteins within the cell make it up, and we’re coming up with biomarker-driven therapies that rather than the chemo approach, a hammer on top of a flower, it’s more like a spoke inside of a wheel of a bicycle, the bicycle stops, it looks the same, but that little breaking of the machinery stops it from working,” he said.
Slomovitz, who is also investigating alternatives for ovarian cancer, said these newer treatments are showing benefits in patients who not only failed chemo, but also patients who’ve never had chemo.
And on Sat., March 5, at the home of the Miami Marlins, firefighters, first responders and corporate teams throughout South Florida will take part in the American Lung Association’s annual Fight For Air Climb.
This is the 18th year of the event that will challenge participants to climb 1,700 steps.
The organization is also offering a “Climb Your Way” option for those who can’t make it to the physical event.
