Mosquito-repellent clothes fight back Zika threat

Good enough for jungle, stylish enough for city

MIAMI – With the Zika virus warnings, Miami's latest fashion trend is mosquito-repellent clothing.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found clothing treated with low levels of permethrin is effective and safe. But mosquito repellent should still be worn on the exposed parts of the body.

Officials suggest that the clothing be worn over non-treated underwear and that it be washed separately. Some people may be allergic, but that is highly unlikely

These are some of the options that won't make you look like you are going hunting:

FOR WOMEN

Skinny pants with hand pockets, about $80, by Toad & Co.: They are made out of a stretch woven polyester/spandex fabric and come in a black and brown print.

Lightweight sheer long scarf, $25, by White Sierra: The gauze accessory comes in shades of periblue, grape and watermelon.

White tunic, about $31, by White Sierra on sale at The House Outdoor Gear: It's made out of cotton. Exofficio has a similar option in more colors for $65

White pants, about $85, by Ex Officio: The design also comes in two other colors.

Hoody, $60, by Ex Officio: This lightweight design partially protects hands and comes in six colors .

FOR MEN

Shorts with multiple pockets, $25, by Mountain Warehouse:  They are made out of a lightweight and quick drying fabric.

Long sleeve tee, $20, by Northern Tool + Equipment: It's made out of a cotton/poly blend and the company claims it lasts for 70 washes. It comes in gray and forest green.

Long sleeve plaid shirt, $85, by Ex Officio: It comes in four colors.

Cargo pants, $30, by Mountain Warehouse: The khakis are lightweight.

DO-IT-YOUR-SELF SPRAYS

Some warnings by the U.S. Army U.S. Health Command: Don't apply the spray when you are wearing the clothing. Wear gloves, shake the can before using it, don't let it touch your skin and apply and dry outside.

These sprays are effective for about six weeks or six washes:

Sawyer Clothing, about $8.

3M Ultrathon, about $8.

Repel, about $40.

If you have pets, keep in mind that if they overdose the chemical can affect their nervous system. It's particularly dangerous for cats. The garments and sprays need to be kept away from children.
