HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. ā Dr. Conrad Murray, who has written a tell-all book about his life as Michael Jackson's physician and friend, sat down Tuesday with Local 10 News medical specialist Kristi Krueger to talk about what he says was the singer's real killer.
The King of Pop was preparing for an unprecedented series of concerts in 2009 to conclude his record-breaking career. But a combination of stress, sleep-deprivation and drugs cut his life short.
Murray was found guilty of manslaughter after prosecutors said Murray's injection of propofol to treat Jackson's insomnia killed the singer.
Murray is now out of jail and living in Broward County.
He told Local 10 News that he is innocent and is hoping to set the record straight in his new book, "This Is It."
Murray said Jackson was a broken man.
"But we were friends and he also divulged a number of adversities," Murray said. "He carried a heavy, heavy load of misery."
Murray said much of that misery came from Jackson's own family.Ā Murray claims Jackson told him that his father gave him hormone shots to prevent puberty and changes in his voice.
"He felt he was chemically castrated," Murray said. "Michael felt like he was the bank for the family -- the ATM machine, and he was tired of that."
Murray claims it was the singer's secret addiction to pain killers that killed him, not the propofol he was given to help sleep.
"He hid from me his habit. I did not know he was abusing Demerol," Murray said.
Though his license to practice medicine has been revoked or suspended in several states, Murray said patients from around the world still come to him for consultation.
He said despite everything, he will always have a soft spot for Jackson.
"I love Michael," Murray said. "He was not perfect. I am not perfect. None of us are perfect. We would have to talk about how he lied if he were here today. But I love him."
"This Is It" was released last week. Ā
