LAS TUNAS: The office of Emprestur, a transportation company centered on tourism, is housed at the historic building of a former pharmacy.
LAS TUNAS: The town was named after Victoria de Las Tunas in 1869, because of the Spanish victory against Cubans, Aug. 16, 1869. The name remained despite Gen. Calixto Garcia's great victory against the Spanish army in 1897. In 1976, the name was shortened to Las Tunas.
LAS TUNAS: This house, built in 1921, is now the museum of Vicente Garcia Gonzalez, a general in the Cuban Ten Years' War. The house was built over the ruins of the barracks destroyed in 1897. It has seven rooms that show the cultural patrimony of the city.

It was named after the Bishop Don Jeronimo Valdes Sierra, who allowed Diego Clemente del Rivero to rebuild the church in 1709. The parish was rebuilt again in 1790. The town of Las Tunas was founded in 1796. It was conferred as a villa in 1848 and as a city in 1853. Slaves were involved in its construction.

LAS TUNAS: A committee to collect funds to build a memorial at a park to be named the Lion of Santa Rita in honor of Vicente Garcia was founded Jan. 11, 1911.

LAS TUNAS: Monument in honor of Major General Vicente Garcia Gonzalez in Avenida 2 de Diciembre. The sign reads. "COLONEL ANGEL DE LA GUDARDIA BELLO - Jiguani (2-16-1875), Las Tunas (8-30-1897) - Mambi under the orders of Gomez, Mace, Calixto Garcia y Maso, won all of his grades in combat. History placed him next to Marti when he fell in two rivers. He died heroically in this place during the last take of Las Tunas."

LAS TUNAS: This monument is called "Columns to the Sky" and it was done by Rene Pena Carbonell at the cultural plaza. They commemorate the fires that burned down parts of the city during the war for independence from Spain.
LAS TUNAS: The city is named after a cactus species that bares the same name and can be found all over the city. The first cattle ranch in the area was know as Las Tunas.

LAS TUNAS: This sign points to the Jobabo River. There is also a municipality and a city with the same name in the Las Tunas province. The word is in native Taino and it refers to a place where there are plenty of Jobo trees.
