Iconic Gainesville eatery Burrito Brothers closes after 40 years

'Financial instability' caused restaurant to shut down

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An iconic Gainesville landmark almost as important as the University of Florida itself has shut its doors after 40 years of satisfying hungry students.

The Independent Florida Alligator reports Burrito Brothers closed its doors for the final time Saturday.

The restaurant, which opened in 1976, was done in by what owner Randy Akerson called "financial instability."

Akerson claimed business at the restaurant had dropped 23 percent from October 2015 to the same period in 2016.

"After 40 years, I am just distraugt," Akerson told the newspaper.

Burrito Brothers was a favorite of students and alumni, many from South Florida, who would make the restaurant their first stop when returning to Gainesville.
